Our Story
Three decades of handmade Calcutta, Fusion, and made-to-order gold jewellery — from Zaveri Bazar to the world
Mama-Bhanja, Zaveri Bazar, 1996
In 1996, Narpat Tejraj Mehta — a B.Tech engineer — and his nephew Jitendra Madanraj Jain — a D.Pharm graduate — set out together from Mumbai's Zaveri Bazar to build a gold jewellery business. Neither came from the trade. What they had were two professional degrees, months of research into a gap they had spotted in the market, and the conviction to build a legacy.
In the early years they worked through outsourced karigars and earned their first reputation supplying the Delhi market. Across the trade, the uncle-nephew duo became known simply as "Mama-Bhanja" — and the name stuck.
They chose Calcutta-style handmade jewellery — a craft defined by hand-cut dies, handmade elements, and karigar-led assembly with no machinery in between. The work was slower, but the detail, the intricacy, and the lightweight build set it apart. That was the gap they had bet on, and retailers began to notice.
Three decades on, Shree Jewellers manufactures from two hubs — Mumbai and Kolkata — with ten-plus master karigars and the teams of smaller karigars who work under each of them. The firm supplies the shelves of some of India's most respected jewellery houses — Waman Hari Pethe Sons, PNG Jewellers, PNG Sons, Joyalukkas, Jos Alukkas, Chandukaka Saraf Jewels — and reaches international clients in over ten countries.
